The Kandy Esala Perahera, also known as the Festival of the Tooth, is one of Asiaβs oldest and most spectacular Buddhist festivals. Held annually in Kandy, Sri Lankaβs sacred hill capital, this majestic procession celebrates the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, housed at the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa).
The Perahera takes place in July or August each year, depending on the lunar calendar, and spans 10 days filled with religious rituals, vibrant parades, and traditional performances.
The highlight of the festival is the parade of beautifully adorned elephants, including the Maligawa Tusker who carries the sacred Tooth Relic casket.
Over 1,000 performers take part β from whip-crackers and fire dancers to traditional drummers, dancers, and flag bearers in colorful attire.
The streets come alive with blazing torches, fire jugglers, and flaming performances that light up the night sky.
Each night, the procession grows more elaborate, culminating in the Randoli Perahera, the grandest parade of the final nights.
The Kandy Esala Perahera is not only a Buddhist religious celebration, but also a cultural tribute to Sri Lankaβs rich heritage. It is held to honor the sacred Tooth Relic and invoke blessings of rain and prosperity.
