On December 12, 2024, Sri Lanka marked a major milestone in tourism with the opening of the Tourist Service and Welcome Center in Habarana, North Central Province. A joint effort between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea, the project launched in 2021 aims to promote sustainable tourism and empower local communities.
Dignitaries at the event included North Central Province Governor Wasantha Kumara Wimalasiri, SLTDA Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam, and Korean Embassy Deputy Head of Mission Jung Sohngyee, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations.
The centre is the result of a long-standing vision born in 2019, supported by Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), and focuses on community-based tourism, capacity building, and enhanced infrastructure. Despite challenges like the pandemic and economic hurdles, the project has successfully delivered a vibrant hub for tourists and locals alike.
Korean representatives also urged Sri Lanka to finalize visa fee exemptions for 37 countries, a move expected to boost international tourism, including visitors from Korea. This center stands as a testament to the enduring partnership between the two nations and their shared commitment to developing sustainable tourism.
